Lone Star’s Afcon Hopes Dash Again!!!!!!!

By Augustus Auggie Audekina-Doe

Liberia will not participate in the Gabon 2017 African Cup of Nations tournament again after 14 years of absence.

The Lone Star failed to beat or get a goal draw away to Tunisia in the last fixture of the Afcon qualifier on Sunday in Tunis.

The James Debbah guarded side was beaten by the Carthage Eagle of Tunisia 4-1 at the Monastir stadium in Tunis.

Substitute Mark Paye scored on his debut to give Lone Star a glimmer of hope in the 71st minute but the goal wasn't enough as Liberia got eliminated by Tunisia.

Debbah, as a coach, again failed for the third time in moving Lone Star to the Nations Cup after appearing twice at the continent biggest football festival as a player, South Africa 1996 and Mali 2002.

Tunisia and DR Congo qualified as winners of their groups and Togo went through as the second best group runners-up on goal difference.

The Carthage Eagles came into the match in Monastir needing a victory to leapfrog the Lone Stars at the top of the group and guarantee qualification.

They got off to a perfect start when Wahbi Khazri put them ahead just five minutes in, and half an hour later their lead was doubled by Taha Khenissi, ensuring a comfortable 2-0 advantage at the break.

Liberia threatened a comeback when Mark Paye netted with just under 20 minutes to play.

The West Africans’ hopes were dashed when a quick pair of goals from Saber Khalifa and Hamza Lahmar put the hosts 4-1 ahead.

In the end the victory saw Tunisia move to the top of Group A on 13 points, while Liberia on 10 points dropped to third place and were eliminated from the running for Gabon 2017.

Tunisia and DR Congo qualified as winners of their groups and Togo went through as the second best group runners-up on goal difference.

Tunisia has secured qualification for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after crushing Liberia 4-1 in their final Group A match on Sunday night.
