Liberia can win group A with a 1 or more goals draw with Tunisia
The Final matches in Group A for the African Nations Cup 2017 in Gabon will be played this weekend with Liberia faceing Tunisia and Togo playing against Djibouti
As it stands right now, Liberia Leads the group with 10 points due to a better head to head record against second place Tunisia who are also are on 10 points. Togo is in the third position with 8 points.
Going by CAF 2017 rule 14.1 thru 14.7, Liberia can win group A with a 1 or more goals draw with Tunisia on Saturday September 3. CAF 2017 Rule as outlined below states:
14.1 Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.2 Best goal difference in the matches between the concerned teams;
14.3 Greater number of goals scored in the group matches between the concerned teams;
14.4 Greater number of away goals scored in the direct matches between the concerned teams;
14.5 Goal difference in all the group matches;
14.6 Greatest number of goals scored in all the group matches;
14.7 A drawing of lots by the Organizing Committee of CAF.
Rule 14 states that in the event of a tie between two or more teams, then only the results between the concerned teams shall be considered. If Tunisia vs Liberia ends up in a 0 all draw, Togo will be the group leaders with Liberia in second place and a hope of qualification if other results go Liberia’s way. But in the event of a 1 or more goals draw between Liberia and Tunisia, Liberia wins the group. Togo is guaranteed 11 points since their results against point donors Djibouti on Saturday will be irrelevant. Thus, in the event of a draw between Tunisia and Liberia, then all the goals, points, and wins each of the three teams scored against Djibouti shall be null and voided and only the wins, points and goals between the three teams will be considered.
As it stands, Togo has 4 goals, one win and one draw against Liberia. They also have one draw, one lost and zero goals against Tunisia. This puts the Sparrow Hawks in first place with 5 points and four goals. Liberia is in second place with 4 points and 4 goals since the Lone Star was able to score 3 goals and one draw against Togo and 1 goal and one win against Tunisia. Tunisia like Liberia also has 4 points but the Cartridge Eagles has only managed one goal and one win against Togo and zero goals and zero wins against Liberia.
The Standing as of now assuming a draw between Tunisia and Liberia and a sure win for Togo against Djibouti:
If Tunisia vs Liberia ends in a 0 all draw all three teams will have 11 points but Togo will have better head to head records against Liberia who will also end on 4 GF and 4 GA while Tunisia will stay in the third position with 1 GF and 1 GA even though they have better head to head against Togo, the number of goals scored takes precedence over the head to head record. But in the event of a one all draw, Liberia will win the group with 5 goals and 11 points, Togo second with 4 goals and 11 points and Tunisia third with 2 goals and 5 points. All is not lost. Go Lone Star go.
