When George Weah enters the Velodrome stadium at Marseille on Saturday
to bid farewell to the sport that gave him fame and wealth, he will
receive a standing ovation from thousands of soccer fans who are
expected throng the stadium to watch him play his last touch of an
extraordinary career.
To climax what has been considered internationally as the end of a
brilliant career, Weah has invited some of the world's finest
footballers to join him in this soccer fiesta that is expected to
attract millions of people worldwide.
More than 54 former and present players from around the world have
consented to play in the farewell match. Amongst those invited for the
match include Zidane Zinedine, Roger Miller, Rigobert Song, Ronaldo,
Ronaldino, Emmanuel Petit, Tarobo West, Romario, Alessandro Del Piero
and Claude Makelele.
Others are El Hadji Diouff, James Debbah, Andre Shevchenko, Marco
Simone, Dunga, Bebeto, Marcel Dessailly, Edgar Davids, Kelvin Sebwe,
Mohammed Kallon among many others.
Weah jubilee presents a clear view of his remarkable performance
on the turf and how his responsibility to humanity helped to inspire
children and others around the world.
Described as "Africa's pride" by former South African President,
Nelson Mandela, Weah emerged from the slums of Clara Town, a suburb of
Monrovia, where he grew up with his late grandmother who he saw his
personal heroine.
