ATLANTA, GEORGIA (USA): As Liberia strives for greater achievement
in sports; the government must consider setting up a cabinet or
national committee for sports development.
That’s the recommendation from Ricky B. Swen, Jr, Liberian
international players’ promoter, and owner of Kubba Fashion of
Singapore, a company dealing in sports wear with its own trade mark
brand name of Kubba.( Please see website: www.kubbafashion.net
Mr. Swen said the committee should be established for oversight
implementation of national strategy for sports development.
“Such a committee will help to improve the action plan for bringing
sports to the Liberian community,” he said in a press release issued
recently.
The International Players’ agent said, “I am confident that since
sports are of significance to Liberia’s development, it is an
industry that could generate substantial benefits in terms of
foreign exchange from top players overseas.”
He explained that sports must be used as a medium of employment for
youths who are dedicated to play to the international level, which
is every player’s dream.
Liberia, Swen said is still in the healing process, following the 14
years of war, and sports must be used as a means to get many youths
engaged in channeling their talents to productive work.
He said he was saddened that there have been reports that an
ex-fighter killed a school teacher in Monrovia, stressing that,
among other programs, sports can be a useful outlet, promoting
goodwill and friendship and shaping ugly behaviors.
“The committee, if formed, should compose of presidents and vices
presidents of the various sports organizations and associations in
the country,” Swen noted.
He said the committee should be chaired by, if necessary, the
president of the republic of Liberia, while the board of directors
and committee members should be ministers and or deputy ministers of
selected ministries and presidents and vice presidents of the
various sports associations.
With such a committee in place, he said, each sports association
should be asked to present a full report of its activities at a
certain period of time. Giving an example, the former Lone Star and
Fulani dare-devil defender, said the committee could find out the
specifics regarding Liberia’s failure to qualify for the 26th
African Nations Cup, scheduled for Ghana, next year.
He added that those local teams’ participating in sub-regional and
continental competitions could also be examined to help provide or
generate the necessities for their involvement
