Our Sports Reporters has selected one of Liberia’s Sports Coordinators and a certificated FIFA Players Agent,

Mr. Steve B. Davis as the “Sports Man of the Year 2006”.

Mr. Davis( in white) has been a strong advocate and mediator for the improvement and development of sports programs, particularly soccer, in the country.

His involvement, particularly during the participation of the Lone Star female U-20 team in the FIFA U-20 female competitions some time this year is worth keen recognition.

He also played numerous role in ensuring that the LFA National League, the national team, the Lone Star and the female U-20 Lone Star team benefit from the supportive arm of a South African based Football Firm identified as Ditiro of which Mr. Davis is an official.

Presently, the renowned Liberia FIFA player agent is working out modalities with some international partners and interested soccer firm to help secure contracts for some local players.

His remarkable assistance to the Lone Star U-20 female team, to some local players as well as the Lone Star of Liberia has greatly contributed to the award, something we believe you will agree with us.

Sports Administrator Of The Year

Minister Jamesetta Howard Wolokollie is our sports administrator of the year. Unlike other sports administrators she has been very radical, vocal and consistent in ensuring that the development of sports all over the country is prioritized.

Considering the year under review, through the instrumentality of the Sports Ministry, headed by Minister Wolokollie, the National County Meet was for the first time played on a round-robin basis. Meaning that every county felt the spirit of sports in their county.

Secondly, her first year saw the National Female U-20 soccer team for the first time qualified and participated in a FIFA female soccer competition.

As Minister of Youth and Sports, she also opened a smooth corridor between the Ministry and Sporting federations in and around the country so as to highlight the needs for the development of sports in the country.

Most Dedicated Sports Official

Mr. George Williams, the Secretary General of the Liberia Football Association is our choice for this award. Mr. Williams, who assumed the Secretary General post of the local football house amidst several confusions and huge tensions within that body, has managed to survive all the hullabaloos and wrangling that exists.

Before his nomination, several nominees had already been rejected and even his, was one of heavy confusion amongst Executive Committee members, something one could suggest might not last long. But despite all of the major troubles, he continues to survive and ably stir the affairs of the football secretariat. He has managed to remain very moderate, avoiding boastfulness and attributing successes at the FA to collective teamwork.

With just 3 months in office, the LFA Chief Scribe has made few personal trips abroad during which he used the opportunity to lobby for with several institutions and personalities for sponsorship of local football activities.

Mr. Brown who is the President of the Liberia National Olympic Committee, LNOC has immensely contributed to the general development of sports in the year under review.

As president of the LNOC, his tireless efforts in ensuring that sports, not only particular sectors of sports develop.

Mr. Martins was very outstanding during the 2005/2006 LBF league season, something that greatly added to his selection today.

International Sports Promoter of the Year

Following a thorough review by this sports desk, we have resolved to give this award to the first Liberian FIFA accredited player agent, Ambassador Alpha Bird Collins. Ambassador Collins, has over the year, been striving to seek the interest of Liberian players on the international scene who want to play professional soccer out of the country. He has over the year, assisted many Liberian players to play out of the country even if this would mean going extra miles to spend his personal resources.

The energetic Liberian player agent has also been working with the local football house to strengthen football in the country. He is currently out of the country to Europe, working with soccer scouts to assist the nation in the development of football facilities that would promote and improve football in the country. Ambassador Collins is also working to ensure that the national flag bearers get all the required international support it needs so that the national flag can fly high in the up coming Nations Cup and at the South Africa 2010 World Cup.

Sports Business Center of the Year

Undoubtedly for us, our choice for this award goes to Mr. Emmanuel T. Pello, General Manager of the Emman Business Center in Monrovia. The young and skillful Liberian business entrepreneur is at the moment operating three sporting centers in the country that are the basic sources of supply to the sporting public.

Mr. Pello’s sporting centers have been actively supplying Liberian players and athletes with the goods coming from the USA and Asia. The business which, started on the side wall or street corners of Monrovia in the early 80s, has now developed with the availability of three separate stores in various parts of the city that are well equipped with various sporting materials such as boots, T-Shirts, trophies etc. These stores have been actively supplying the sporting public with materials as its way of boosting the promotion of the sports.

The Emmam Business Center has been supplying materials to the various counties in the on-going county meet and was instrumental in supplying the various teams in inter- ministerial league.
