Sports
Ministry Holds Jerico's Cheque

Jericho Nagbe
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The coach of premier league side NPA
Anchors, Frank Jericho Nagbe has apparently run into trouble with the
Youth and Sports Ministry.
The Sports Ministry has, according to reports, denied the veteran
tactician his salary cheque for the month of January 2005.
The Youth and Sports Personnel Director, Henry V. Freeman is quoted as
saying that Minister Wheatonia Dixon-Barnes passed the order to
withhold Nagbe's cheque. The Minister is currently vacationing in the
United States.
When contacted, Nagbe confirmed the seizure of his cheque by the
Sports Ministry. The coach claimed that the move was strange in that
it was his first time experiencing such incident since he got employed
with the Ministry since the 1970s.
The alleged decision by the Sports Minister could only be attributed
to Nagbe's refusal to serve the national soccer team Lone Star in
recent days.
The Sports Ministry wanted Jerico Nagbe as second to Wilfred Lardner
at the helm of the Lone Star of Liberia.
The NPA coach turned down the offer on grounds that he could only
serve as head coach having served as deputy twice for the national
team.
The NPA Anchors tactician believed that he was capable of heading the
national team in a capacity higher than a deputy. According to
Jericho, he was not prepared to serve under any coach whose
achievements were below his.
Referring to numerous laurels he has won as a coach, Jericho
considered the deputy Lone Star coaching post as an area too little
for him to occupy. "I am the only coach to become Coach of the Year
six times. So, I believe I can only go to the top after serving twice
as deputy coach of the national team."
The comments by Jericho later prompted the Sports Ministry to appoint
Navarro Saykie as deputy coach of the Lone Star.
