Speculation Is Over: Soccer Peace Pledge Competition Is Finally Launched

"The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) wants to see football taken from the field to the community," an Executive Committee member of the Liberian Football Association (LFA), Alexander Jaeploe has disclosed at a ceremony when he officially launched the Inter schools Sports Association (ISSA) soccer Peace Pledge essay competition.

At the well-attended and colorful ceremony at the Sports Commission on Broad Street recently, Mr. Jaeploe said FIFA was deeply concerned about decentralizing football from the soccer pitch to the community.


He indicated that fairplay was very crucial to the development of the game, and as such, the Soccer Peace Pledge Essay Competition significant was a program intended to help the process.

Mr. Alexander Jaeploe is a representative of the Academia at the executive level of Liberia Football Association.

He also said if fairplay must be achieved in footballing, the inhabitants of the community, especially the students should take the lead by taking part in such competition.

The academic representative on the LFA Executive Committee further pointed out that the issue of fairplay was good for everybody in keeping morality society.

Commenting further, Mr. Jaeploe said this is the time school principals as well as sport directors of various learning institutions should use the opportunity to encourage the students to fully participate in the month-long Soccer Peace Pledge Essay Competition so as to help ensure that fairplay is achieved in the country through sports.

Also speaking, the head for the National Association of Liberia Schools Principals (NALSP), Denial Towalib, described such competition as great and encouraging.

Mr. Towalib said unity would be enhanced in the community and society at large when the inhabitants of the various communities, especially the students, who are the future leaders, are fair at home and at school.

The NALSP head further point out that the National Associations of Liberian School Principals will fully support such initiative as mean of achieving its objective.

He further urged all Students to be part of such a great initiative for benefit of all Liberians.

Earlier, the President of the Inter Schools Sports Association (ISSA), Mr. Joseph Willie outlined the significance of the Soccer Peace Pledge Essay Competition.

He said the essay competition is geared toward creating key massages that would be used at all football games to guide players observe FIFA fairplay.

It is in this direction, according to him, that the participating students will exhibit good essay writing, which is expected to highlight peace massages.

Moreover, Mr. Willie said the best peace essay would be selected as the Soccer Peace Pledge, and would be recited at all football games in the country.

Several attractive prizes have already been earmarked for winners.

First prizewinner will walk away with L$10,000; second winner would receive L$7,000 and third would be awarded LD$5,000 respectively.

The Soccer Peace Pledge Competition is sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Liberia Transition Initiative (LTI) in collaboration with the Liberia Football Association (LFA).

Meanwhile ISSA has disclosed that its 2004-2005 championship in kickball and football would climax on Wednesday at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS).
