Solomon Grimes
Returning Home

Sports Coordinator Steve Davis
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The Mighty Barrolle and Lone Star young defender Solomon Grimes is on
his way back from Europe.
Amidst reports that he has already landed in Ghana, the Liberian
International Sports Coordinator Steve Davis disclosed that the rising
defensive star did not make the trial in Moldova.
According to him, after the player had a test match, he was dropped
from the premier team to the second division.
Davis, who sponsored the player’s search for greener pasture, said: “I
negotiated with them but he never wanted to stay on the second
division team. So he was sent back. He is going to be in Liberia
soon.”
Apparently frustrated over the player’s attitude, Davis indicated that
there are no plans at this time to take him back abroad. “I am looking
at other players and opportunities,” Davis said.
He recently funded the travel of three locals, including Abu Sando and
James Lommel to South Africa. On their status, Davis said a soccer
team in South Africa is caring for the Liberian players.
“They are presently at the academy and sooner or lately they will be
playing. They were not able to play in the capacity of the South
African leagues, so they have to train for a while to get to that
level.”
He confessed that there exist a lot of Liberian players with talents,
stressing the need to help them achieve their goals.
However, the stumbling he has noticed in this regard is the problem of
upgrading the league in order for players to excel when invited for
trials abroad.
“The league is not competitive enough. The playing capacity here is
below standard.
“At end of the day, you encounter problem which we are undergoing
today. This is why we want to se football improved.”
The Sports Coordinator fell short of making comments on his choice for
the leadership of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) ahead of
elections in March.
“At this moment, I don’t want to comment on that, but at a later date,
I will make my presence felt.
“I just want to work with somebody that is flexible and have the
vision to promote sports throughout Liberia.
“I think both of them (Izetta Wseley and Siaka Sheriff) have the
experience but at this point, I am still assessing the candidates to
get to the bottom and of course I will make my decision.” |
