Fans Disappointed Once Again

18 June 2007
Hundreds of Liberians who thronged the Antoinette Tubman Stadium
yesterday to cheer the nation's pride and job, the Lone Star to
victory were disappointed once again, as the national team failed to
pull a victory over a young but determined Equatorial Guinea squad.
Lone Star, which featured mostly young and inexperienced players
ended the first half goalless after missing several chances that
would have given them the advantage over the visitors who also
appeared inexperience.
The nation's flag bearers commenced the second half of the game
with some dangerous moves in the eighteen-yard of the visitors,
something that kept Liberians on their feet as they continued to
cheer, calling for goal to put their team ahead. As Liberians waited
pitifully and cheerfully, the full ninety minutes elapsed with none
of the Liberian strikers finding the back of the net. God's fairness
also revealed as the visitors themselves were unable to reach behind
the Lone Star goalie, Sunday Seah.
The cheers of Liberians proved fruitless, as all efforts by the
Lone Star was thwarted by the strangers' goalkeeper, who made
several dazzling saves that denied his opponents the much needed
victory.
Yesterday's result means that Liberia has lost all hopes of
reaching next year's African Cup of Nations final in Ghana, despite
still having a game against Rwanda.
Just a fortnight ago, the Lone Star lost 2-1 to the Indomitable
Lion of Cameroon at the same Antoinette Tubman Stadium in front of
hundreds of anxious fans.
In the group's other encounter, Cameroon qualified for the
African Nations Cup finals as they kept up their 100 percent record
in the qualifiers with a 2-1 home triumph over Rwanda in Garoua on
Sunday.
Cameroon, four-times winners of the continent's top footballing
prize, overcame scorching temperatures in only their second
international in the northern town as well as the absence of key
striker Samuel Eto'o.
