SWAL Frowns On Kortie’s Statement

Thursday, 11th May 2006

By D. Webster Cassell
The Sports Writer Association of Liberia (SWAL) has strongly criticized Mr. David Kortie, for what it terms a misinformed statement made on a local radio station regarding the role of sports journalists in covering Liberia’s away matches.

According to a release issued by SWAL, the association threatened to issue a news blackout on him unless he (Mr. Kortie) makes an open apology to the body.

The release said that the association has labeled Kortie’s assertion as grossly unfortunate and that it seeks to undermine the relentless efforts being made by the sporting press to abort the declining state of Liberian sporting programs.

“The statement of Mr. Kortie is also intended to degrade and under rate the local sports press, who have been doing their out most best to ensure that the recent development on the progress of Lone Star female games get wide spread publicity”, the release added.

SWAL in the release indicated that it is sadden by the fact that Mr. Kortie and his likes will pursue the media to highlight their activities only to them at the back burner, when all is well.

The Sports Writer Association of Liberia emphasized that Mr. Kortie’s self-seeking PR venture runs counter to the smooth tie it has maintained with the Liberia Football Association, (LFA).

Notwithstanding, SWAL is assuring the public that the sporting press will continue to spotlight the efforts of the country’s youngsters as they endeavor to put the country back on the sporting map.
