Renovation work being carried out by the People’s Republic of China
at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex situated at the ELWA
Junction in Paynesville is very close to completion.
During a tour by journalists yesterday at the stadium led by the
personnel of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, several contractors
along with Chinese engineers were seen hurriedly putting
finishing-touches on the nation’s largest stadium.
The team of reporters and the personnel of the Ministry of Youth and
Sports were met upon arrival at the Sports Complex by the Project
Manager of the SKD, Lt Qt Lin, who guarded the delegation throughout
the areas completed at the stadium.
Speaking through an interpreter after the tour, the project manager
of the stadium, Lt. Qt Lin explained that the entire work at the
stadium was now 90% completed and by the end of May, the entire
process would have been over.
He said by June the entire system will be put to test to ensure that
they are all working properly.
He narrated that the water system, the fire protection system and
all the lights along the roads in the stadium have been completed.
He further stated that, for the scoreboard, they have finished the
installation and by the end of this month to the end of May the
testing would have been completed.
Lt Qt Lin intimated that in the next few days, one hundred new seats
will be installed at the VIP wing and that the stadium will be able
to host about thirty thousand persons when completed.
When quizzed as to whether the stadium can be used by the national
team for the match against Cameroon in June, the project manager
noted that it will be difficult to use the stadium in June because
all the systems need to go on test during that same month.
He however said, it will not be impossible to play the game at the
stadium but that he could not advise that.
The reporters were however opportuned to tour the beautiful natural
carpet, the newly refurbished bathrooms, the European styled
Commentary Rooms, the VIP and Stadium wing, and the Control room,
from where every activities obtaining in and around the stadium can
be viewed.
Meanwhile, during the tour, it was observed that the hotel and the
vicinity around the stadium were not renovated. When asked
concerning the left out facilities, the Project Manager narrated
that they were not part of the contract signed by their government.
The SKD Sports Complex was built during the administration of the
late President Samuel K. Doe, after whom the stadium was named,
although the plan for the stadium dates back to the administration
of President William R. Tolbert. The stadium was constructed by the
Chinese and officially dedicated in 1986.
