The Chief Executive Officer of
Sports for Development of the Underprivileged (SDU)
Mr. Emmanuel Geeza Williams has arrived in the
country.
Mr. Williams, who arrived in the
country on Tuesday, July 18, is here to meet with
authorities of both the Ministry of Youths and
Sports (MYS) and Liberia Football Association (LFA)
to discuss Liberia’s readiness in becoming a member
of the International Network of Street Paper.
As it is the tradition, the SDU
boss has already met with top officials of the two
institutions briefly. A date has been set aside to
meet the authorities of the two to better discuss on
the significance of the INSP and its full
implementation in the country.
The INSP is a network of 35
million members representing 29 countries in Africa,
Asia Europe, north and south Americas.
The group’s aim is to alleviate
poverty and build a just society in the world,
create one street paper at a time as well as to link
various organizations including the Press Union of
Liberia (PUL) and the Sports Writers Association of
Liberia (SWAL) for assistance in training,
development of media houses with the INSP.
According to the Founder and Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) of Sports for Development
of the Underprivileged (SDU), Emmanuel Geeza
Williams, his organization will soon start a street
paper in Liberia in the coming months.
Mr. Williams said SDU would also
link orphanages, street kids and others to various
organizations in Europe for assistance. Geeza said
the group is open to any ideas that will help kick
out poverty from Liberia.
Meanwhile, SDU will conduct a
weeklong exercise from August 1 – 8, 2006 to select
players for the Homeless World Cup. At least 200
players will have the opportunity from all sectors
of Monrovia.
Eight players will represent
Liberia at the Homeless World Cup where 48 other
nations will converge on Cape Town, South Africa in
September this year. At the same time, an all-star
event has been organized for Monrovia.
Among world stars expected for the
event are the Dutch international Aaron Winter,
Nigerians Austin Akpehe and Sam Umerah who plays in
the German third division and Ed Duala alias Diego
and Dave Jackley.
The all-star event is aimed at
generating funds to build better toilet facilities,
provide clean drinking water and purchase essential
drugs to treat HIV/AIDS, malaria etc for the less
fortunate .
Its long-term goal is to unite
communities, foster reconciliation, and rebuild
health, education and social structures. Geeza said
this charity event intends to bring top European
players against Africans.
He, however, said that due to club
engagements and concerns for injuries most of those
contacted declined the invitation but indicated that
with hopes of improved security, they are expected
next year.
In fact English premiership side
Tottenham Spurs and the National Basketball
Association of America (NBA) have been approached
for next year. For this program, SDU is in
partnership with the Dutch organizations, the Prince
Claus Fund, ICCO and the Foundation for Sports
Development (FASD).
