Let Lone Star Down

Momo Wall Blamo
The Liberia National Team Lone Star left the country on Saturday,
March 23, 2008 for a friendly international against Sudan.
Although, Lone Star coach Antoine Tony Hey wanted only foreign-based
Liberian players for the pending match, the team was constrained to
carry an almost entirely local side along with the Indonesia-based
players named in the original squad.
Reasons given for the reverse in the German’s decision to turn to the
local talents stemmed from the fact that nearly all of the players
invited from Europe have given ‘feeble excuses’, according to the
Deputy Secretary-General for Technical Affairs of the Liberia Football
Association (LFA).
Mr. Benedict Yarsiah said it was only the former Mighty Barrolle
goalkeeper Momo ‘Wall’ Blamo of Belgian side Kon Sava FC that has
positively responded to the invitation extended to him.
The former Mighty Barrolle goalie accepted the Lone Star’s invitation
as stated in an e-mail message to Mr. Jenkins Pelenah, Deputy
LFA Secretary-General for Administration.
The Lone Star will meanwhile meet Sudan on Wednesday, March 26, 2008
as part of the many friendly matches approved by the world football
governing body FIFA ahead of the start of the 2010 World Cup
qualifiers.
The Lone Star’s next friendly match will be in mid April against the
Leone Stars of Sierra Leone. This is a match that the coach of Liberia
had set aside exclusively to select local players that would be used
together with their colleagues abroad for the 2010 World Cup
qualifiers.
Mr. Hey also planned a two-week training camp in his native Germany so
as to fully prepare the Lone Star for the task at hand.

The Lone Star’s first official match in the qualifiers is against the
Scorpions of Gambia at the end of May in Monrovia. The German coach
lastly handled Gambia. There will then be subsequent matches against
Senegal and Algeria for Liberia.
