Poor Performance Deny Local Coaches of Lone Star Job

The Deputy Minister for Sports at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Marbue Richards said local coaches were denied the opportunity to coach the senior National Team of Liberia the Lone Star base on their poor performance and lack of confidence.

Minister Richards made the statement over the weekend at a one day Helbert Grisby Memorial Lecture Forum organized by the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL). He said the committee could not select Kadala Kromah as deputy coach for Lone Star due to his past experience as head coach against Senegal . “The name Kadala as deputy coach was already rejected in streets corner by fans and supporters of Lone Star before the committee could even reach a conclusion, and we never had time in our favor for 2010 competitions so coach Hey had to bring his deputy” He noted.

Speaking on the theme “The appointment of a foreign soccer coach for Lone Star: What are the prospects and Challenges for the team in the joint 2010 World Cup and African Nations Cup Competitions,” Minister Richards disclosed that Liberians feel that with the present of a foreign coach the selection of players will be balance. He said that for now more business entities are identifying with the National Team.

The Deputy Minister also indicated that committee has been appointed for financial support for the team 2010 competitions, while according him the Sports Ministry have received communications from several businesses who are ready to provide financial resources for Lone Star training in Germany.

For his part, Mr. Josiah N. Johnson, former Technical Manager of Lone Star commended the government of Liberia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Liberia Football Association (LFA) for bringing in foreign coach.

He said the German man has a very good prospect but indicated that it was regrettable to know that the coach is about to take care of a country that does not have a National Team.

The veteran coach also said the process of bringing in foreign coach was over due and blamed the Sports Ministry and the local FA. “The delayed caused the coach late recruitment of players while he should be planning strategist by now,”Mr. Johnson noted.

The former Technical Manager said Lone Star in the past failed because players were asked to pre finance their trip, something which he said was not good for most of them.

He also disclosed that Joe Nagbe was the right person for the deputy coach job so that he could get more experience under coach Hey.

“The 2010 road to South Africa and Angola is not easy, despite our political differences, we need Amb. George Weah for the challenges ahead,” He concluded.

Also speaking at the forum, former Lone Star player Jonathan Sogbe commended Coach Antoine Tony Hey for his first test in Sudan . He said giving the chance to a Liberian to serve as deputy coach under the German man would be a learning process for the country's former player. “We need to advocate for our former Lone Star players to be selected as coaches for the Inter Schools Sports Association (ISSA) league through the Sports Ministry,” He concluded.
