No County Meet For 2005

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

It appears that the 2005 National County Meet will not take place in Monrovia.

The National County sport meet almost started last month after it was resurrected last year and
eventually won by Sinoe and Gbapolu in kickball and football respectively.

However, the idea of holding the County Meet this year was abandoned after Superintendents of
the various counties threatened to stop their teams from participating after they alleged being
neglected by government.

The Director of Sports of Liberia, Navarro M. Saykie could not confirm or deny whether the
tournament will take place this year. Yet, he expressed doubt about the holding of the festival
after a long delay.

He said a coordinator of the County Meet at the Internal Affairs Ministry has promised to settle
the matter of a plan to boycott the County Meet with the Superintendents and then inform the
Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Since then, Mr. Saykie, who is the chief organizer for this year’s event, said the Sports Ministry has yet to receive any word from the Internal Affairs Ministry even though there are reports that some of the demands of the Superintendents have already been met by government, with the issuance of vehicles to the county officials.
