Niger needed a late penalty before dislodging a beleaguered Liberian side 1-0 in Niamey.

Soumaila Alhassan scored from the penalty spot in the 91st minute, after Belgium-based striker Ibrahim Tankara, was brought down.

The penalty was Alhassan's chance to make up for his many wasted chances throughout the game.

Liberia also squandered a number of opportunities as another defeat keeps them at the bottom of the group.

Liberia's campaign was dogged by instability at home.

In their previous game, a stand-by team based in a refugee camp in Ghana lost 2-1 to Guinea in Accra.

Although Niger are now tied on equal nine points with Ethiopia, they stand no chance of qualifying for the Nations Cup tournament in Tunisia.
