…Rallies Sponsors For Regional Competitions
For more than a decade the West African Football Union, WAFU has
been entrapped in a state of near dormancy without its usual
regional competitions.
But at a meeting last month in the Ghanaian Capital Accra, ten of
the region’s sixteen members voted a new core of officers headed by
Dr. Amos Adamu in a bid to revamp that regional sporting body.
Dr. Adamu, a Nigerian, who is also an executive committee member of
both the world football governing body, FIFA and the Confederation
for African Football CAF replaced the Ivorian, Jacque Anouma who was
absent from the Accra gathering.
Amidst the administering clamor, the respected Nigerian
administrator, Dr. Adamu has been busy initiating donor driven
programs that would speedily revive competitions in the region.
WAFU, under Dr. Adamu on May 16, 2007 assembled representatives of
the region, sixteen-member nations in Lagos Nigeria including a huge
media representation. The purpose of the regional assembly was the
rebuilding and Image transformation of WAFU to appeal to donors
whose support is crucial to organizing regional competitions that
would strengthen football in the region.
The re-branding program, held in Victoria Island, Lagos, witnessed
the unveiling of a new logo that consist of a ball resting on three
colors, semi circular basement of red, gold and green followed by
shade of light.
In his keynote address at the ceremony, Dr. Adamu said the new logo
will send a loud signal that WAFU is back.
Dr. Adamu said the WAFU Nations Cup, the WAFU Club Championship,
U-15 and 17 and Women Nations Cup are series of regular tournament
that would keep the Youths of the region playing football. He
reaffirmed his pledge to quit as president if he fails to organize
competitions in WAFU.
The Nigerian appears to be matching words with Action. Giant GSM
Global Communications of Nigeria, have already committed four
Million dollars to the Adamu led WAFU.
Abia State Governor and the sponsor of two times African Champions,
Enyamba, Chief Orji Kalu, has committed two million dollars and a
giant sized trophy. Dr. Adamu’s named series of companies and
football passionate Nigerian Heavyweights, who have already
consented to bankrolling the new WAFU.
The fanfare, the outpouring of commitment invoked renew confidence
amongst the jammed packed regional representatives, who departed
Lagos with a new WAFU in mind.
