A TOTAL of 34 players are now battling for shirts at
the Metro Hotel, Lagos, camp of the female U-20 national team, the
Falconets.
This is sequel to the recent invitation extended to about 15 players
to be part of the camp preparatory to the team's return leg
encounter with their Liberian counterparts.
The invitation extended to the new girls is coming on the heels of
allegations of biased team selection leveled against the technical
crew. They have, however, denied the allegations.
At the camp, The Guardian learnt that the Coach Emmanuel Tetteh-led
crew was constrained to invite about 15 new players to camp to
replace those that had been decamped for alleged non-performance and
age discrepancies.
Prominent among those dropped is Stella Godwin, a Denmark-based
player, who was said to be plagued by a leg injury. She scored
Nigeria's only goal against the Liberian team when both met in
Monrovia last week.
Godwin was reportedly not in her best form in the few matches she
had played so far owing to the injury.
This development, perhaps, led to her inability to find the back of
the opponents' net, especially in the 5-0 drubbing of Kenya in Ijebu-Ode.
The team's goal tender, who is with the Pelican Stars FC of Calabar,
was amongst the players that were given the marching order from
camp.
The winner of the Nigeria/Liberia encounter, which comes up next
weekend, will grab one of Africa's two tickets to the FIFA women
U-20 World Cup in Russia later this year.
However, reacting to allegations of money exchanging hands between
players and the technical crew, one of the team's assistant coaches,
Eucharia Uche-Obiajunwa, described it as false.
