SUPER League champions Negri Sembilan Naza are just one
step away from ending their 58-year Malaysia Cup drought when they
beat Malacca TMFC 2-0 in the second leg semi-finals at the Hang Jebat
Stadium last night.
Negri, who drew 1-1 with TMFC in the first leg at the Paroi Stadium,
go through on a 3-1 aggregate.
It is Negri's third final in the history of the Malaysia Cup. In their
first final appearance in 1948, they beat Selangor 2-1 but lost in the
2000 final 2-0 to Perak.
Negri scored a goal in each half through Christian Bekemenga Bekamengo
and Buston Nagbe Brown.
It was Negri who looked the brighter of the two teams in the opening
minutes, and they had their first look at goal in the eighth minute
when Muhd Anuar Jusoh was brought down just outside the penalty box.
Noel Rodwell Mwandila, who stepped in to take the free kick, unleashed
a shot which beat the TMFC wall but not goalkeeper Mohd Sufian Abd
Rahman.
TMFC managed to trouble the Negri with their fluent passing but the
Negri defence, led by Captain Khairul Anuar Baharom, stood firm.
Negri enjoyed a prolonged spell of possession from the 15th minute
onwards and took a deserved lead in the 17th minute through striker
Christian Bekamengo Bekamenga. It was his 17th goal this season.
Buston Brown, marauding down the right flank, sent a high cross which
sailed over two TMFC defenders to Bekamengo, who rifled a shot from
close range to put Negri ahead.
In the 32nd minute, TMFC’s Mohd Nizaruddin Yusof low cross was parried
by Negri goalkeeper Mohd Affendy Kamsah and the ball was met by
Zainuddin Ariffin, whose left footed shot was saved by the goalkeeper
with his legs.
Negri continued to dominate but could not increase the lead in the
first half.
However, after the breather, Negri added their second goal in the 51st
minute through midfielder Brown who capitalised after TMFC goalkeeper
Mohd Sufian fumbled a Rodwell Mwandila shot.
TMFC went on the offensive to narrow the gap after the one hour mark
but Negri packed their defence, causing their opponents to try from
long range but simply could not find the goals.
