National Sports Meet Begins With Pomp And Pageantry
-Under The Theme: Peace Through Sports

 3/ 19/ 2004 Monrovia-  After weeks of hard planning and work, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has successfully got off the ground the 2004 National Sports Meet.

The official program took place on Friday, March 19 with a parade of the participating counties through the principal streets of Monrovia onward to the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS), where an indoor program declaring games opened was held.

National Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL) Chairman, Charles Gyude Bryant urged the participating counties to compete with a spirit of good will and peace for one another. He said the games should serve as a unifier and reconciler among Liberians after 14 years of civil war.

His statement was read by Minister of Youth and Sports, Cllr. Wheatonia Dixon Barnes.

Chairman Bryant called on Liberians to see the games as an awareness for the disarmament and demobilization exercise being under taken by the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

"Let the games serve as motivator factor for fighters to lay their arms and come and compete for their respective counties," he advised.

For her part, Sports Minister Barnes said it was not easy getting the games started despite the tough conditions the citizens are faced with  in rural Liberia. She said Liberians should see the games as an awareness for the disarmament and mobilization exercise as well a factor aimed at reunifying and reconciling the people of Liberia.

She in the near future when total disarmament shall have been completed, the Ministry will hold major National Sports Meet to celebrate the freedom of Liberia from evil doers.

Meanwhile, the games began with one kickball game and one football game.

Bong County and Nimba were engaging each other in kickball, while Cape Mount and Bong County were scheduled to compete in a football match. The games continue tomorrow.
