Liberian Sports

( 3/24/ 2004) The first female president
of the Liberian National Olympic Committee (LNOC) has disclosed that
more assistance is on the way for Liberian sports.
After paying a weeklong visit to Yaounde, Cameroon where she
attended the Ad-Hoc Committee meeting of the Association of National
Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Mrs. Deborah J. Williams said
executives of ANOCA have all revealed their desires to help Liberia
through sports.
According to her, the Executive Director of the Cameroonian National
Olympic and Sports Committee, Alipha Mamat Bonbar has vowed to assist
the Liberian Track and Field Federation (LTFF) with equipment and
funds.
The LNOC President also named the Treasurer of ANOCA, Alhaji A.B.
Dandeh Njie of Gambia as somebody who has promised to ensure that the
Olympic Afrique Project in Kakata, Margibi County is to commence to in
the shortest possible time.
Mrs. Williams said the Olympic Afrique would be a sports village
that would accommodate all sports.
Additionally, Mrs. Williams disclosed that the Secretary-General of
ANOCA, Raymond Ibata has promised to give her administration all his
support as Secretary-General in order to enhance the upliftment of
sports in Liberia.
"He said I am the first woman in West Africa and the second woman in
Africa to head an NOC. The first woman is from Namibia," she quoted
the ANOCA Secretary-General as saying.
"The entire ANOCA has promised to work with me," mentioned Mrs.
Williams, who succeeded Clemenceau Urey as LNOC President last year.
The trip to Cameroon was the first for Mrs. Williams since she took
over as President of LNOC on December 27, 2003.
Mrs. Williams, who assured that come what may, Liberia would be at
the 2004 Olympic Games, said her next trip will take her to Athens,
Greece next month to participate in the ANOCA General Assembly.
