Mighty Blue
Angels Expelled From CAF Cup-Winners-Cup
-For Failure To Meed Registration Deadline
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expelled Mighty
Blue Angels of Liberia from this year’s Cup-Winners-Cup competition.
Liberia Football Secretary General, Yanqueh Borsay, made the
disclosure to our correspondent over the weekend. He said CAF informed
the LFA that Mighty Blue Angels was expelled on Friday, February 22,
2003 for failing to complete full registration.
Mr. Borsay said Mighty Blue Angels needed to pay at least
US$310.00 to complete registration. Mighty Blue was scheduled to face
Ghana’s Asante Kokoto in the CAFCup Winners Cup Competition.
The LFA Chief Scribe said the team was prevailed upon on many
occasions to complete its registration with the governing body of
African Soccer without much success. He also disclosed that a fine was
CAF is imminent, but could say the amount.
Mighty Blue Angels is the second Liberian club to be expelled
from CAF Competition. Reigning LFA Champions LPRC Oilers was barred
from participating from CAFChampions’ League following the club’s
failure to honor its fixture in 2001 competition. Oilers was also
fined US$1,500 by CAF.
Mighty Blue Angels was set to setting an international record
by being the first Liberian second division team to participate in CAF
Competition having won the Liberia FA Cup ahead of the country’s top
first division teams likes Mighty Barrolle, Invincible Eleven (IE),
LPRC Oilers, NPA Anchors, Mark Professionals, St. Anthony FC among
others.
Many sports enthusiasts in Liberia see Blue Angels Expulsion
as unfortunate development for the country soccer which they say has
been on steady decline over the last few years due the clubs not
participating in international competitions.
