Lonestar next Opponent on Hold for CAF Draw

The senior national team of Liberia, Lone star, has taken a major step in cruising through to its third Nations cup berth after South Africa in 1996 and Mali in 2002.

The Lone star led by Head Coach Kaytu Smith, held the Brave warriors of Namibia to a 0-0 tie to move pass the South Africans.

However, Liberia now awaits the Confederation of African Football or CAF to decide the next opponent on the road to South Africa Nations cup finals in 2013.

On September 23, 2010, a decision of CAF executive committee ruled to change the timetable for the holding of AFCON from even to odd years for the preliminary stages and selected South Africa to host the edition which comes back-to-back with 2012 edition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Moreover, a weighted coefficient on points was given to each of the last three editions of the Africa Cup of Nations as follows:
2012 edition: points to be multiplied by 3
2010 edition: points to be multiplied by 2
2008 edition: points to be multiplied by 1

If two countries are equal in the number of points in the above classification the number of points that they have accumulated throughout all their matches played in the last 3 final tournaments of the CAN will determine their ranking (on the basis of 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 for a match lost).

The teams will be divided into two pots based on the ranking. Each tie will contain one team from each pot.

Note: Teams in italics are still competing in the first round and not yet certain of qualifying for the second round.

In the first direct elimination, Liberia qualified by default over Mauritius in 2011, before being paired against Namibia. Liberia won the first leg 1-0 on 29 February 2012, and eventually qualified to the final round haven held the latter to a scoreless draw away on 16, June 2012.

According to the schedule, the next and last round of direct elimination amongst nations that did not attend the 2012 Nations cup is between September 7-9, and October 12-14, 2012. The actors at the last AFCON in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea (with the two hosts going into a playoff) will be drawn against Liberia and others with each winner from the home and away matches in September and October marching to South Africa.

Who will Mama Liberia face? CAF decides soon!!
