Sister, Like Brother

The new man at the helm of the National Port Authority (NPA) Sport
Association is none other than Roosevelt Richard Doe.
He becomes the second member of his family to take over a sporting
entity.
His sister, Mrs. Geraldine Doe-Sheriff currently serves as the
President of the Oilers Sports Association of the Liberia Petroleum
Refining Company (LPRC). Her husband, Siaka A. Sheriff held
similarly job prior to becoming elected as Vice President for
Operations and Administration respectively of the Liberia Football
Association (LFA).
The new NPA sports boss has succeeded Jimmie Toe, who resigned
recently, citing personal reasons. Yet, beyond that, it has been
gathered that Mr. Toe was frustrated about the alleged failure of
the NPA management to give the needed assistance to the sporting
arm.
Notwithstanding, the ascendancy of the man popularly known as “Rozo”
or “Julius Aghahowa” faces the task of creating a renaissance at the
Freeport of Monrovia as far as sport is concerned. Probably
Roosevelt is the right man at the right time, one major factor that
saw him contesting the polls without an opponent.
There are a number of initiatives that the Doe-led leadership has
set its eye on.
One is to refurbish the NPA sports pitch, a venue currently being
used during the current national football league season.
Doe wants to institute a scheme that would make each employee of the
NPA to make financial and other contributions to the sports
department.
The new NPA sports president, as part of his plan of action, intends
to create educational opportunities for the players of the various
teams that fall under the association. The issue of players’ welfare
was not left out either.
Doe, meanwhile, is faced with the daunting challenge of conducting
the affairs of the male soccer team, NPA Anchors, the female
football contingent, the Professional Anchor Sisters, and the
basketball outfit, NPA Pythons.
The NPA Sports Association has been fortunate under the outgoing
leadership with some successes during the past months. The NPA
Pythons have just triumphed in the latest basketball championship.
Before then, the NPA Anchors won both the 2006 football Knockout
Championship and the LFA Super Cup. Whether the new president and co
of officers will follow suit remains to be seen.
Born on June 1, 1963 in Harper, Maryland County, Roosevelt has been
living with sport all around him.
His elder brother Ezekiel Doe is one of the country’s living soccer
greats.
Commonly known as Zico during the heydays of a wonder career he has
under his sleeves, Ezekiel made name for Maryland County during the
County Meet. Thereafter, he became a star not only for the Yellow
Boys, Invincible Eleven (IE) but also the national football team,
Lone Star.
He now lives in the United States after quitting the game there
barely two decades ago.
The sister of Roosevelt, Geraldine also played active soccer for
which she was nicknamed “Lady Zico”.
Upon retirement, she became one of the architects of the first
structural female football championship that has now turned out to
be a success story today. In so doing, she invested into the Tito
United, a major force reckon with in female soccer.
It is without doubt that Rozo would combine his own leadership style
with that of the huge knowledge of his family when it comes to
sports in creating a sporting empire to boost the image of the NPA
sports association. But for now, it’s a wait and see situation.
