Liberian Females To Face S/Africa

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
The female under-20 team of Liberia Lone Star will next meet South
Africa in the third and final round of the FIFA World Youth
Championship for Women in Russia.
The South Africans have just recently eliminated Mozambique 9-0 on
aggregate as the Liberians ousted Algeria in just the first leg via a
3-2 away win.
Two former internationals players in Sheryl Botes and Anna Monate are
coaching the South African side, otherwise known as Basetsana.
They received extra assistance in the build-up to their return leg
over Mozambique last Saturday in Pretoria from the former FC Zurich
striker August Makalakalane, who was recently appointed coach of the
South African national women’s side.
They have also benefited from a long-term stay at the High Performance
Centre in Pretoria, a state-of-the-art training facility for athletes
from a variety of sports.
South Africa’s senior women’s team, Bayana Bayana, beat their
Mozambique counterparts 6-1 away in Maputo in the qualifiers for the
upcoming CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals and the youth team
was able to emulate the success of their seniors.
The first leg of the match will take place during the last weekend of
April with the return legs being held on March 12, 13, and 14.
