LFA
League Begins June 15

By Julu M. Johnson,Jr.
It has been disclosed that the 2008 national league of the Liberia
Football Association (LFA) will start on June 15 around the country.
According to the Co-Chairman of the Competitions Committee of the
LFA, Mr. Garmondeh Karnga, the national league would be played at
five venues.
Currently, the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) on Lynch Street in
Monrovia and the Nancy B. Doe Sports Stadium in Kakata, Margibi are
undergoing refurbishment through the Second FIFA Goal Project and
the Winning In Africa Project respectively. So, the two stadiums
would not be among venues where the pending national league would
take place this year.
Mr. Karnga, who is also an Executive Committee Member representing
LFA Sub-Associations and President of the Premier League club Mighty
Barrolle, named the venues to be used as the Doris Williams stadiums
in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Unification Town field in Margibi
County, CH Dewey School ground in Tubmanburg, Bomi County and the
Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex practice pitch in Paynesville as
well as in Ganta, Nimba County.
He mentioned that one team from Nimba and two from Grand Bassa,
which qualified during the LFA third division playoffs, would also
be involved in the 2008 national league.
For the sake of creating competitions among the teams, the LFA
decided to rather not demote but to increase the number of teams in
the premier, first and second divisions at the end of the 2007
national league season.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that the 2008 national league would
be played on a one-phase basis so as to meet up with the
registration period for participation in the 2009 CAF Champions
League and Confederation Cup. Liberia ’s Black Star was the only
club that took part in the 2008 CAF Confederation Cup.
