James Salinsa Debbah and George Oppong Weah both played for Mighty Barrolle in 1984 as youngsters in their twenties
before Oppong switched to Invincible Eleven. Salinsa and Oppong on opposite
side of Liberia's two premier league long-term champion rivals helped to
push soccer to its emotional height in the '80s.
Little did the two young men, George Oppong Weah and James Salinsa Debbah,
who started off in the backyards of Monrovia's slums, know they would have
emerged as world class footballers in demand from Africa to Europe and to
the Middle East. The leaping and skillful James Salinsa Debbah, was
the first to be spotted and transferred from Liberia as a professional
player. His stint with Union Doula of Cameron soon sent coaches from there
flying to Liberia to examine this country for another Salinsa. They found
one and more.
Salinsa followed his boyhood friend to France and captured fans everywhere.
His record has been exemplary with various European teams, including Alès,
Monaco, Paris SG, Lyon -Derle of Belgium, ending with Iraklis of Greece
since 1999.
