Bangalu Advocates Reforms At LFA

By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.

The President of second division side Devereux has launched another attack on the Liberia Football Association (LFA). Mr. Jerron Cole Bangalu says this is intended to bring reforms at the LFA.

Speaking in the Borough of New Kru Town at a "haitai center" on Saturday, June 19, Bangalu said the LFA must improve itself because it is dormant at the moment.

He believes football would improve unless politics is removed from the game. "The LFA that was efficient was politicized."

According to him, Liberia is the first country where there is a "chief patron of sports."
"When you make it appear that without the president, who is the chief patron of sports, nothing can happen, you will kill football."

He also kicked against the premier league, saying: "no need for a premier league because other countries have it."

"The teams are not empowered and the LFA must make sure that happens."

Mr. Bangalu cited that there exists an Executive Committee at the LFA that is almost appointed by the president.

The Devereux President, therefore, called for the election of all heads of the various Sub-Committees rather than having them appointed by the president of the LFA so that "they cannot be used as stooges.

"In elections, the LFA President stands a chance because he appoints the Sub-Committees chairmen," Bangalu cried.

He stressed the need to formulate long and short term programs. "That's the work of the LFA."
"The secretariat is dormant and the Secretary-General just plays card games on the computer," said Mr. Bangalu.

"Our problem is with the LFA and there is a need for reform. We will have prospects once reforms take place in Liberian football"

Bangalu said, "The reforms we are calling for is not because of George Weah but for the development of football."

"There are people in the LFA who are not the best but they are there to harm the FA. I don't think Weah will harm the FA."

One may think Bangalu is buttressing Weah's dream to head the LFA, but the former refused by saying "I am not the campaign manager of George Weah, but I am campaigning for reforms."

Bangalu, who also called for an extra-ordinary Congress that would repeal the LFA Statutes, added, "it is not George Weah's battle, but it should go beyond Weah."

"There is a need to remove everything that will serve as hindrance. Being a club president doesn't make you a good FA president. We have seen that all over the world."
