Apology Demanded
From LFA For Sunday's Violence
By Julu M. Johnson, Jr.
June 2,2004-The Promoters
of Liberian Athletes (PROLFA) is demanding an apology from the
Liberia Football Association (LFA) for the violence that took place
at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) on Sunday.
After angry fans disrupted the league match
between bitter archrivals Mighty Barrolle and Invincible Eleven
(IE), PROLA indicated that the apology was necessary because the LFA
failed to provide security at the stadium.
The group argued that the violence would not have
occurred in the presence of security.
As a result of the absence of security, on behalf of PROLA, Chairman
Joseph Farkollie said the LFA should be held liable for what was
seen as one of the darkest days of Liberian soccer.
Farkollie is with the view that the violence would not
have expanded if there were riot police at the ATS on Sunday.
He said the LFA should apologize to spectators who paid
their money for the match but failed to see a happy end.
He also admonished the nation's soccer governing
body to apologize to the two teams for the huge expenses they
covered, only for the match to be disrupted.
He noted that the incidence should serve as the
basis for the deployment of sufficient security at all matches in
the future so as to avoid a repeat.
