The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has arrested 14 persons
in connection with the riot that occurred last Sunday at the Samuel
Kanyon Doe Sports (SKD) complex in Paynesville, outside of Monrovia.
Making the disclosure yesterday at the UNMIL Weekly press briefing in
Congo Town, UNMIL Civilian Police Commissioner, Mr. Mark Kroeker
pointed out that Liberia Lone Star's defeat by Senegal was not
justification for some disgruntled citizens smashing of vehicles,
looting and burning down of properties.
He further stated that those ex-combatants who participated in the
illegal demonstration and are part of the DDRR process, will be
dejected from the process and there will be no benefit for them, and
worse of all, if there is any claim for them, it will be forfeited.
Com. Kroeker also clarified that there has been no confirmed reports
about deaths that occurred during Sunday's march as was reported by
the media.
According to him, if anyone claim that death occurred during the riot,
that person should make it known by reporting the case to the police
at once.
Also speaking at the press briefing, the Deputy Special Representative
of the UN Secretary General, Mr. Abou Moussa and UNMIL Deputy Force
Commander, Maj/Gen. Joseph Owonibi, in separate statements confirmed
that 11 of UNMIL's vehicles were destroyed during Sunday's riot.
According to them, Liberians should see the need to move forward from
war to peace and work together in rebuilding this nation instead of
engaging into acts that might destroy the image of this county and its
people.
Maj/Gen. Owonibi among other things, warned ex-combatants not to
venture into Ivory Coast to disarm, since they (UNMIL) have received
information about their plans. He added that if they force it, they
should have themselves to blame as they would be forcibly disarmed
without benefits.
